The Nut-Shell

Here is a very nice edition of “The Nut-Shell” published by Fraser & Porter in Goderich Ontario Canada in March 1890. It is “a Monthly Journal of General Information for the Masses”. It does not appear to be a news letter but rather a household hints and general humour paper. On the fourth page are ads for local businesses like John Labatt’s Ale and Stout from London Ontario, Chas. A. Nairn Groceries and Provisions, Wilson’s Drug Store, Fred J. Pridham The Tailor, Boots and Shoes from E. Downing.

On one page the largest ad is from Fraser & Porter Books & Stationary and Wall Paper which was located at North St. and Square. This is an original paper in excellent clean condition. It measures about 10 by 7 inches folded open. A great 19^th century Goderich Ontario newspaper item. I do not know the history of the Nut-Shell so if anyone out there has some knowledge to share, please do.

Excellent Condition for a collectible that is 121 years old.

This the first issue of Volume I.

An early merchant’s flyer from Jas. A. McIntosh

Interesting item from Jas. A. McIntosh & Co. Dry Goods and Groceries. It is a notice “To Our Patrons” that CASH is now the only payment McIntosh & Co. will accept for goods. Credit is gone but McIntosh will “Sell Lower than any other House In Town”. This 8 ½ by 6 inch original item is also in excellent condition. At the bottom it says Signal Print, Montreal Street Goderich. No date on it but it too is 1890’s or earlier.
