When it comes to picking a mobile phone contract in the UK, you’re not short of options. In a space formally dominated by big names like EE, Three, O2 and Vodafone, there has sprung up dozens of smaller networks, each with their own distinct advantages. It’s into this latter group that Sky have launched their own mobile network.
Piggybacking on the O2 network, Sky Mobile has positioned itself as a no-nonsense mobile network with some pretty superb perks. But which plan is for you? Let’s take a look
When you’re picking a Sky Mobile package, you’re given the choice between a number of extremely low-price data packages. Here’s what they offer:
- 500MB of data for £5 per month
- 1GB of data for £10 per month
- 3GB of data for £15 per month
- 5GB of data for £20 per month
Each of those packages rolls over at the end of the month, so that if you’re on a 3GB plan but only use 1GB of it, next month you’ll have 5GB to play with. It’s a superb feature of the network, and data will roll over for a maximum of 3 years.
Minutes & Texts
Texts and minutes with Sky Mobile are always unlimited, and always sold together. To add texts and minutes to your data plan, you’ll have to pay another £10 monthly, added to the cost of your monthly data.
That is, however, unless you’re an existing Sky customer. For those customers, your minutes and texts are free – so you only have to pay the cost of your data.
Sky Mobile offer a wide selection of the biggest and most popular smartphones on the market at the moment, including the Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6 and iPhone 7. The prices on these phones vary, but on average you can expect to pay £26 per month for their Swap24 plan and £41 per month for their Swap12 plan.
But what is Swap 12 and 24? Put simply, Swap24 allows you to swap out your phone after 24 months for a new model, whilst Swap12 lets you do it every 12 months. Neither plan required an upfront cost but both plans require you to send your phone back to Sky.
Alternatively, you can take your contract without a smartphone, potentially saving almost £500 on the most expensive plans.
Which is right for you?
There can be no doubt that Sky Mobile offers an intriguing option for those looking for a new smartphone contract, thanks to low prices and a range of interesting perks, which include:
- Unused data rollover for up to 3 years
- Phone swapping at 12 or 24 months
- Free unlimited minutes and texts for Sky customers
- Change your data plan every month with no extra charge
- Sync your Sky+ recordings to your smartphone for entertainment on the go
Additionally, you’ll get access to Sky’s excellent customer service team on the Sky contact line.
We don’t, however, recommend you take a smartphone as part of your plan. Though they help you break up the cost of your new phone, the fact that you have to return them at the end of your plan makes them quite poor value. We’d recommend sourcing a smartphone from elsewhere and pairing it with a Sky Mobile contract.
